ARTIST 001 Season 3

GeoVanna Gonzalez

GeoVanna Gonzalez is a Miami-based artist and curator, and the first commissioned artist of Commissioner’s third season. Her practice explores shifting notions of gender and identity in our environment, and the relationships between the organic and the technological. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, California where she received her BFA at Otis College of Art and Design.

Interested in producing alternative environments, her work explores the connections between private and public spaces through interventionist and participatory art, new forms of collaboration, and collectivity. Her recent works have focused on making public art more inclusive and queer. Earlier this year her digital commission Exotic Naps (2020), for the ICA Museum, was a stream of consciousness poem drawn from her notebooks, which she has compiled over the span of several years.

Her recent solo exhibitions include: When we open every window (2019), Gr_und, Berlin; Play, Lay, Aye (2019) The Bass Museum, Miami; PLAY, LAY, AYE: ACT III, (2019) Commuter Biennial, Miami. She has participated in group exhibitions at The Corcoran School of the Arts and Design (2019) Washington, DC; Dimensions Variable (2019) Miami; University of Maryland Art Gallery (2019) Maryland; PS120 (2018) Berlin; NGBK (2018) Berlin; 5 Car Garage (2018) Los Angeles.

Other recent awards A WaveMaker grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation and Locust Projects (2020); The Ellies Visual Arts award by Oolite Arts for Supplement Projects (2018).

She is founder and curator of Supplement Projects, an alternative art space & community meeting point based in Miami; Co-founder of performative reading club Read What You Want!; and a member of queer/feminist arts collective COVEN Berlin, working on exhibitions and events that focus on body politics, gender, labor, sexuality, and art.
