Learning Language with Jamilah Sabur

Jamilah Sabur’s interest in how people communicate emotion when vocabulary fails reminds us that any language or system in isolation will have its limitations. Her work champions the kind of plurality that fosters a multilingual, interchangeable, and emotionally-richer existence. Similarly, when launching Commissioner last fall, our mission was to create a more connected Miami.

By helping everyday people collect work by artists living in this community, 40 locals have each built their collections with pieces by Typoe, Adler Guerrier, Kelly Breez and now, Jamilah Sabur.

Big love to Nina Johnson for hosting Commissioner’s fourth and final artist reveal event at her beautiful home; and to her incredible team for their generosity of spirit and support. Tito’s Handmade Vodka cocktails have been our pairing of choice throughout the season, including at the after-party hosted by The Anderson, where the evening continued way past our bedtime.

Photography of this special Collector finale on June 14 was captured by Andrea Lorena, aka FuijiFilm Girl.
