ARTIST 001 SEASON 4

Philip Smith

Famously known for establishing The Pictures Generation movement with the seminal exhibition PICTURES in 1977, Philip Smith along with other emerging artists of the time—Troy Brauntuch, Jack Goldstein, Sherrie Levine, and yes, Robert Longo—fundamentally helped shift the way we see art. Additional artists of the movement now include Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Laurie Simmons and others.

As a young artist, Philip moved from his home in Miami to New York, working as a writer for Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, before going on to become managing editor of GQ. His unusual trajectory as both a storyteller and visual artist has been captured in his memoir, Walking Through Walls, published by Simon and Schuster—the true story of growing up with a father who discovers that he has supernatural powers.

Philip has since participated in the Whitney and Beijing Biennials; and his artwork is in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of Art, Boston MFA, MOCA, San Diego, Dallas Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Art, and Allen Museum in Oberlin, among others.
