On Being and Identity with Juana Valdes

It’s only fitting that our collecting journey lead us to Juana Valdes. Not only because of her thematic explorations of bodies of water, but also because Juana’s work tells the story of many Miamians—immigrants, multi-hyphenates, and people who have lived “on the edge of the edge” of society.

As the second commissioned artist of Season Four, we look forward to learning more about Juana’s artistic practice and her story with you. Widely represented in collections at institutions such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture and Pérez Art Museum Miami, as Juana tells it, one of the most intriguing aspects of this collaboration with Commissioner is the opportunity to connect directly with locals working together to support artists.
