Michele Oka Doner at Home in New York

Earlier in May during New York art fair week, our community gathered at the home studio of Michele Oka Doner and husband Fred Doner. In her wisdom, the Season Five commissioned artist reminded us that the sublime of the natural world is all around us—if only we care and slow down enough to take notice.

Now, BirdHouse—Oka Doner’s latest public art sculpture—is free and open for everyone to visit at Bayshore Park in Miami Beach. Located at Fairgreen Hill near the Banyan Tree, this work reminds us of the gentle words she shared during our visit:

“A bird gets up every morning and sings its song. It does not wait to hear what other birds are singing, nor does it look to see if another bird is getting more notice. It knows its song innately and sings. This is nature: knowing your own song.”

Deepest gratitude to the Doners and all who traveled near and far to participate in our New York program, this year presented in collaboration with Common Things—the story-forward boutique in Manhattan’s East Village helmed by architect and designer Komal Kehar.
